In this vital role A Worldwide Pioneer in Biotechnology is looking for an experienced Intellectual Property professional with a solid background in both molecular biology and computer sciences to protect A Worldwide Pioneer in Biotechnology investment in Generative Biology. Generative Biology harnesses the power of computational modeling to revolutionize the discovery and development of groundbreaking therapies for treating grievous illnesses.

The successful candidate will work individually and in legal teams and on cross-functional R&D and business teams across various geographies and time zones to identify patentable subject matter, create and implement effective IP strategies, assess third party landscapes, draft and prosecute patent applications, direct foreign counsel, and advise internal stakeholders and decision-makers. Knowledge and experience practicing patent law in the area of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML).

This Senior Patent Counsel position can be remotely located with the United States OR work from one of these A Worldwide Pioneer in Biotechnology locations: Thousand Oaks, CA OR Cambridge, MA or South San Francisco, CA.

Basic Qualifications:
J.D. degree or LL.M. degree from an accredited law school, admission to practice law in a U.S. jurisdiction
Or
Four plus (4+) years of experience practicing intellectual property law
Or
Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office
Or
B.A. or B.S. in computer science, bioengineering, computational biology, bioinformatics, mathematics, or electrical engineering

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ten (10) or more years of experience practicing patent or intellectual property law
  • Five (5) or more years of experience practicing patent law in the area of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), deep learning, data sciences, computational biology, bioinformatics or bioengineering
  • Experience in conducting freedom to operate analyses and protection of software and AI/ML inventions globally through patent procurement, copyright, and/or trade secrets
  • An advanced degree such as a master's degree or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Bioengineering, Computational Biology, or Bioinformatics, or in another discipline with a dissertation or thesis having a significant AI/ML component
  • Solid understanding of basic molecular biology
  • Experience in pharmaceutical industry and knowledge of the drug development process
  • Excellent analytic and legal writing skills
  • Outstanding communication, and collaborative skills necessary to effectively partner with with and advise data scientists and other stakeholders in highly cross-functional teams
  • Strong management and leadership skills
  • Ability to work independently and in teams, prioritize workflow and work efficiently, meet demanding deadlines, and manage multi-dimensional projects in a fast-paced and evolving environment
  • Develop strong legal strategies in emerging field
  • Experience negotiating and drafting licenses and other agreements involving AI/ML technologies
  • Experience in U.S. and/or foreign adversarial proceedings (such as patent litigation, Inter Partes Reviews, Post Grant Reviews, or oppositions)
