About the role:
The An American Bank Holding Company Legal Department is seeking a talented attorney with a passion for privacy law. The attorney in this position will join our small team of legal professionals focusing on rapidly evolving areas in privacy and data protection. They will be a subject-matter expert on a wide range of comprehensive and sector-specific privacy laws, with a particular focus on issues arising from online advertising/tracking, email marketing, text messaging, and emerging technologies. This attorney will work on new and important initiatives across the entire company and provide legal advice on business-critical issues.

In this role, you will work closely with colleagues within Legal, as well as with business, compliance, and risk partners across An American Bank Holding Company lines of business. You will operate at the intersection of financial services and technology, and you will issue-spot, problem-solve, and innovate to assess and mitigate legal and regulatory risk in a challenging space.

To succeed in this role, you will need strong analytical and organizational skills, demonstrated judgment, the ability to express complexity in simple terms to non-experts, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment. Responsibilities likely to include:
  • Provide expert legal advice on privacy and data protection issues.
  • Assist business, compliance, risk, and legal partners in identifying privacy issues, summarizing risks, developing customer-focused solutions, and communicating advice.
  • Support partners in building technical and organizational controls and advise on privacy operations and strategy.
  • Collaborate with outside counsel, monitor legal developments and industry trends, develop training and educational materials, and otherwise contribute to the legal privacy team's knowledge and resources.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
  • Active member in good standing of at least one state bar
  • At least 4 years of experience in a law firm, at a government agency, or as in-house counsel

Preferred Qualifications:
  • A background in privacy law, regulatory counseling, and/or consumer financial services
  • Familiarity with GLBA, CCPA, CAN-SPAM, TCPA, HIPAA, GDPR, or other specific privacy laws preferred but not required
  • Experience applying law to the use of new technologies related to online advertising/tracking, email marketing, text messaging, online data collection and use, sharing data with third parties including pixels/tags and APIs, financial technologies, and other emerging tech
