Description:

An American Non-Profit Human and Poverty Rights Organization seeks an experienced and passionate attorney to join our Impact Advocacy team. The Impact Advocacy Staff Attorney will work with the Directing Attorney and An American Non-Profit Human and Poverty Rights Organization's various program teams to develop and litigate cases that will remedy system injustices, including class actions, writs, and multi-party civil actions, covering all phases of litigation. This attorney will also engage in public policy advocacy to address issues arising from An American Non-Profit Human and Poverty Rights Organization's program work, including through legislative policymaking, regulatory advocacy, and participation in coalitions.

This position is eligible for An American Non-Profit Human and Poverty Rights Organization Legal Services' hybrid/remote workplace designation. While the primary workplace is An American Non-Profit Human and Poverty Rights Organization's offices, at the discretion of the immediate supervisor, the employee may be permitted to work remotely or may be required to work in other locations depending on workload/business obligations.

Essential Duties:
  • Under the supervision of the directing attorney, will work closely with the Impact Advocacy Directing Attorney and An American Non-Profit Human and Poverty Rights Organization advocates to identify, develop, and pursue litigation and policy solutions to systemic inequities.
  • Conduct all phases of civil litigation, including fact investigation, settlement negotiations, drafting pleadings, discovery, law and motion practice, trials, and appeals.
  • Analyze, track, develop, and lobby for legislative and regulatory proposals at the federal, state, and local levels.
  • Interface and partner with external stakeholders, including advocacy coalitions, community service providers, governmental agencies, policymakers, and legal service providers.
  • Work with pro bono attorneys and in-house volunteers on impact litigation and policy advocacy projects.
  • Communicate effectively with partner organizations, stakeholders, and the media about project work.
  • Case management and grant compliance (opening, coding, entry of case time, case reviews, etc.).

Requirements:
  • Licensed to practice law in California (required);
  • At least four (4) years of litigation experience (required, trial experience strongly preferred);
  • At least two (2) years of poverty law and/or civil rights litigation experience and demonstrated commitment to public interest (preferred);
  • Strong research, writing, and motion practice experience (required);
  • Exceptionally organized, self-motivated, and goal-oriented (required);
  • Experience or exposure to policy advocacy/lobbying (preferred);
  • Experience working with pro bono volunteers (preferred);
