Description:

Becoming a Special Assistant Public Defender would allow you to handle Post-Conviction Petition cases on a contract basis for A Government Entity Public Defender's Office.

Essential Functions:
  • Provide legal representation to an inmate of the Illinois Department of Corrections beginning with Stage 2 of the Post Conviction Petition process.
  • You would review the case and court files, interact with the petitioner, and represent their legal interests through Stage 3 of the process.
  • This representation does not include appeals.

Knowledge Skills Abilities and Education Required
  • Possess a strong working knowledge of Illinois criminal procedure.
  • Have experience with criminal felony defense.
  • Possess strong writing skills.

Education and/or Other Requirements:
  • Juris Doctor Degree is required.
  • Licensed to practice law in the State of Illinois.
  • Must possess your own malpractice insurance.
  • Must have your own office space and transportation.
