Job Summary:
Seeking a Privacy Counsel Attorney! We are looking for a creative and high energy attorney with expertise in privacy that is interested in working at the nexus of law, business, technology, data, and consumers. Our team within the An American Insurance Company Law and Regulation department is growing to enable our business to thrive in the face of an ever-evolving regulatory environment and emerging technology.

This attorney will provide real time and critical business-focused privacy counsel for a broad range of businesses, emerging technologies and compliance issues. This attorney will be recognized internally as a subject matter expert in privacy law, has strong business acumen, and, in addition to privacy, supports matters across the enterprise relating to technology, transactions, cybersecurity, commercial, risk management and data management.

Key Responsibilities:
Core Competencies:
  • Strong understanding of GLBA, FCRA, GDPR, HIPAA, CCPA and/or similar state laws with capability to conduct complex research and determine applicable and pertinent laws, statutes, regulations, rules, and other legal authority
  • Proactively counsel the enterprise to ensure compliance with existing laws and regulations; and on the implementation of new requirements, including emerging requirements relating to A.I.
  • Anticipate legal concerns and provide creative problem solving in a dynamic business environment
  • Conduct risk-return analyses on key issues, looking at issues from a holistic perspective, recognizing overall impact to the enterprise; make strategic recommendations based on risk analyses
  • Advise business partners on emerging business issues, legal subjects and risk management
  • Play a key role in executing strategy, action planning, and communication with business partners, business units, and other areas of Law & Regulation
  • Leverage extensive knowledge to monitor and review the most complex new laws, regulations, and case law; identify and summarize relevant issues
  • Play a key role on complex projects, collaborating between legal teams within Law & Regulation and with business clients, as appropriate
  • Understand interaction in regulated environments between business, policy, compliance, legislative and legal frameworks
  • Assist in building a culture of constructive debate and conversations with a virtual team multiple across locations

Supervisory Responsibilities:
This job does not have supervisory duties.

Education and Experience:
  • J.D is required
  • 7+ years legal experience in a law firm or an in-house legal department for a mid- to large-sized company
  • Experience in the following areas: privacy, cybersecurity, technology, international, M&A, strategy, commercial, data, and/or highly regulated sectors
  • Experience operating within a parent company and its family of companies
  • IAPP certification is a plus
