A Non-Profit Organization assists low-income communities by representing low-income tenants in eviction proceedings, collaboration with community-based organizations, and affirmative litigation to challenge abusive and discriminatory behaviors that displace low-income families and eliminate affordable housing. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to serving disadvantaged populations.

Qualifications:
  • Active membership in the California State Bar
  • Knowledge of landlord-tenant, housing law, and the eviction process
  • Litigation experience preferred
  • Demonstrated commitment to serving the needs of low-income persons
  • Demonstrated ability to function professionally and effectively within a highly stressful environment
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Ability to work effectively with government agencies, staff, volunteers, students, attorneys, and community members
  • Excellent writing and public speaking skills; and
  • Experience in trial advocacy and negotiation strongly preferred
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Excellent oral/written communication, research skills, and computer competency
  • Organizational and case management skills
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member
  • Spanish language proficiency is preferred but not required

Essential Functions:
  • Interview applicants, assess their legal issues, and provide legal services including legal research and factual investigation, counsel and advice, brief services and document preparation, dispute resolution, and representation of clients in administrative and judicial proceedings
  • Provide attorney services in DV and family law matters such as dissolution, child custody, spousal support, domestic violence restraining orders, etc.
  • Offer legal support in family law cases, including drafting and overseeing document drafting, court appearances, trial preparation, and more.
  • Direct representation on DVRO or if issues cannot be resolved informally
  • Provide legal support to non-attorney staff and pro bono volunteers assisting with client intake and legal services
    • Provide accurate and complete information for grant reporting to grant funders, including documenting services in the case record
