What you will do:
We are looking for a Deputy General Counsel & Director of Legal Services who can help shape our vision and support our mission. Here is what the position will look like.

Department Director Responsibilities:
  • Provides strategic direction and oversees the management and maintenance of department deliverables striving for operational excellence (productivity, quality, SLAs, customer experience of services provided, etc.). Builds high performing teams with vision, leadership, goals and metrics. Serves as a role model for team members; takes action and inspires team members to embrace and implement culture initiatives. Provides awareness to staff how their work impacts other departments, programs and the enterprise. Encourages collaboration and holds team members accountable for achieving outstanding results.
  • Responsible for all management functions including: hiring, training, planning and directing work, coaching and staff development, managing and evaluating performance, recognizing and rewarding employees; corrective action procedures and practices, addressing complaints and resolving problems. Contributes to the development and management of the department budget.
  • Works closely with Directors across the organization to make tactical and operational decisions that advance company strategies and goals and collaborates to deliver on company-wide deliverables/requirements.
  • Oversees/leads departmental projects and continuous improvement initiatives; may lead cross functional teams.
  • Develops and implements department policies and procedures to ensure compliance with federal, state, local and company policies, rules and regulations.

Job Specific Responsibilities:
  • Provides legal advice to the Corporation regarding complex corporate transactions, corporate structures, legal arrangements with external parties, legal matters impacting a Health Maintenance Organization and concerning the state Division of Insurance, legal issues impacting a state contracting entity and concerning the state Procurement Office and the Colorado Department of Health Care Policy and Financing, as assigned.
  • Assists CoAccess leaders with formulating strategies for creating complex business arrangements to support the Corporation's growth and innovation efforts, as assigned.
  • Identifies potential legal issues with proposed business and product models.
  • Participates in internal and external negotiations to finalize contractual terms, such as data use and intellectual property, restrictive covenants, and compensation.
  • Works on extremely complex and multifaceted problems in which analysis of solutions and/or facts require an evaluation of intangible variables.
  • Develops methods, approaches, and evaluates criteria for advising the Corporation on level of risk and provides guidance to subordinate attorneys to assist and develop them to providing advice on level of risk.
  • Manages multiple, high-profile, fast moving projects including overseeing and managing external counsel on such projects when needed and approved. Ensures quality standards are achieved and projects are delivered on time and within budget.
  • Innovates process improvement that supports the productivity, quality and development of subordinate attorneys.
  • Participates in the contracting program of the Legal Department, including drafting, reviewing, and negotiating legal documents such as: commercial and healthcare agreements across a wide range of subject matters, hearing briefs and position papers, and other appropriate documents to represent the Corporation, and for use by the Corporation's staff.
  • Provides legal advice to the Corporation in contemplated business transactions, corporate policy development, and potential disputes to help structure legal, workable arrangements and, to the extent possible, avoid misunderstandings, disputes and litigation. Provides legal guidance in identifying critical problems and applies both legal and compliance principals to yield outcomes that minimize risk and support the Corporation's mission.
  • Ensures the proper tracking and analysis of new healthcare legislation impacting the Corporation, and advises the executive and senior management staff, as necessary, about the Corporation' compliance with applicable federal and/or state statutes, rules and regulations.
  • Understands and implements rules and regulations regarding data privacy and security issues under State and Federal law.
  • Engages in complex research on legal and regulatory issues affecting the Corporation, including preparing written memoranda and opinions and presenting results to executive and senior management staff, as assigned, and supervise subordinate attorneys on such research projects.
  • Provides legal and strategic advice on a broad range of employment law and DEI issues, as assigned.
  • Solves problems and makes decisions daily relative to contract negotiations, corporate legal questions and/or matters brought against the Corporation, in a manner that encourages a cooperative work ethic and culture.
  • Provides internal educational services, both within the department and throughout the Corporation, as requested, and promotes awareness of legal risk management and changes to laws impacting the Corporation to help the Corporation avoid legal problems.
  • Collaborates with the Legal Department Manager on department activities and reports concerning assignment tracking, project tracking, productivity, quality, customer satisfaction and process improvement. Supports the Legal Department Manager's role in assigning projects, tracking work assignments and generating reports.
  • Stays current on changes to the laws that govern the work of the employed lawyers and the corporations.
  • Collaborates on the development and management of the department budgets and is directly responsible for the portion of the budget that supports the development and quality of work of the subordinate attorneys by tracking and evaluating the productivity and quality of performance of the subordinate attorneys.
  • Provides backup legal support to the CIO and Information Technology Department (“IT”), particularly in the contracting of IT staff and services as needed.
  • Participates as legal department representative on Corporation committees and workgroups, providing legal guidance across all lines of business and departments.
  • Represents the department in peer groups created by the organization to support strategic and operational work.

What you will bring:
Education: Juris Doctorate degree required.

Experience: Seven to ten years' experience practicing law, with significant experience representing health care institutions, facilities, corporations, payers or health care providers with healthcare IT, provider contracting and/or public heath expertise preferred. Experience representing a corporation or non-profit organization preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Strategic business planning, change management, people management and project management skills required. Experience in directly supervising and developing employed lawyers is required. Position requires excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills. Advanced legal research, logical thinking and problem solving skills required.Demonstrates support for the Corporation's mission, vision and values. Must be detail-oriented with strong organizational, time management and analytical skills. Must be proficient in Microsoft office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Manages multiple complex priorities and projects with tight deadlines.
