Position Summary:
A Government Entity's Office is seeking experienced and qualified applicants to be considered for the position of Deputy City Attorney. The Deputy City Attorney will assist the City Attorney in providing a wide range of legal services to the City Council and to City departments, officials and employees. A successful candidate will be well versed in Virginia general and local government law and their application to the functions of government.

The starting salary for the position is negotiable within the range, depending on qualifications and experience. Essential Job Functions:
The City Attorney's Office performs most of the City's legal work in-house, with the exception of representation of the City's Department of Social Services. The duties of the Deputy City Attorney will include drafting or reviewing legal documents such as ordinances, resolutions, deeds, leases, contracts, real estate closing documents, and other legal documents, preparing memoranda and rendering advice to City Council, City Manager, and City Departments, reviewing and preparing amendments to the City Code, reviewing Freedom of Information Act requests and responses, performing essential legal research, monitoring new federal and state legislation that could affect the City, representing the City in court on Zoning and Building Code enforcement matters, and assuming the duties of the City Attorney in his / her absence.

A successful candidate must be able to work independently, prioritize workload, manage multiple projects in a timely and efficient manner, and work effectively with staff to ensure projects are kept on schedule, provide reliable legal advice, and attend night meetings as needed. Excellent written and oral communication skills are required, and experience in contract review and land acquisition is preferred. Minimum Required Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctorate Degree
  • Five years' experience practicing law, with prior experience in local government law preferred.
  • License to practice law in Virginia or eligibility upon hire for membership in the Virginia State Bar
