Position Summary:
A Non-Profit Organization is seeking a Coverage Attorney in CLCLA4. Reporting to the Firm Director, the Coverage Attorney will provide multi-courtroom coverage for all CLCLA4 cases including non-minor dependents, dual status youth, and CSEC. The Coverage Attorney will also provide as-needed assistance with education, regional center, and pre-filing casework under the supervision of the unit supervisors or Firm Director. This role offers a unique opportunity to practice multiple areas of law within a team-based, collaborative practice model. The successful candidate possesses the ability to digest facts quickly and analyze the law efficiently while able to pivot nimbly and quickly from one legal discipline to another. Responsibilities:
  • In-person and virtual court appearances in the juvenile dependency specialty courts – CSEC, non-minor dependent and juvenile justice dual status courtrooms
  • Appear in juvenile justice courts throughout Los Angeles County and attend other hearings including administrative, expulsion, or public benefits hearings as needed
  • Meet with and interview clients and other case-related individuals
  • Work closely with supervisors regarding case and client related matters
  • Review cases and communicate with attorneys and supervisors about cases
  • Provide assistance as requested by the firm's supervisors or Firm Director on a variety of cases including those involving non-minor dependents, dual status youth, and commercially sexually exploited children/youth (CSEC)
  • Work closely with case managers and peer advocates in a collaborative case model
  • Attend trainings, seminars, and conferences regarding current trends in CSEC, juvenile justice and related topics
  • Available for daily in-person and remote courtroom coverage, including client interviews, trials and negotiations
  • Communicate with all CLCLA4 teams to obtain/provide updates regarding cases being covered and submit action requests when appropriate; ensure next court dates are entered into JCATS and/or CMS.
  • Coordinate coverage with CLCLA4 Attorney Supervisors and Firm Director.
  • Any other duties as requested by Attorney Supervisors or Firm Director.

Requirements:
Experience & Qualifications:
  • Applicants must meet the following criteria:
  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant law practice experience, with at least 1 year in dependency law.
  • Possession of a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree.
  • Active membership in good standing with the State Bar of California.

  • Experience in related areas of law including juvenile justice, CSEC advocacy, education, mental health law, and/or public benefits
  • Experience working in multi-disciplinary settings
  • Demonstrated ability to work with older foster youth, teens, and young adults
  • Ability to adapt to different schedules and courtroom assignments daily
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Integrity in interactions with CLC staff
  • Ability to effectively communicate with other attorneys, staff, bench officers, court personnel, clients and other parties in the dependency process, service providers, and the public
