A Non Profit Organization is the premier worker organizing center in the Inland Empire, with a track record of changing the logistics sector through strategic organizing, education and policy. WWRC is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of the thousands of workers in the supply chains of major retailers across Southern California through education, advocacy and action. We educate workers and community members about their rights in the community and the workplace. We support workers with legal claims when they encounter violations at work. We work on local and statewide policy, and campaign for justice in the supply chains of major retailers.
About the Position:
A Non Profit Organization's Legal Department provides cutting edge legal strategy to support worker organizing campaigns and policy initiatives to improve working conditions in the warehouse industry. A Non Profit Organization's attorneys and advocates also support low-wage workers across all industries with a wide range of issues through legal clinics and other services.
This position demands commitment both to movement lawyering practice and rigorous advocacy in direct legal services, requiring significant resourcefulness and creativity. Candidates will be considered for a Staff Attorney or Managing Attorney position, depending on experience and qualifications. The successful candidate will:
- Provide direct legal services to low-wage workers in a wide range of employment law matters, through counseling, pro per support, and representation in administrative proceedings and state and federal court
- Develop and implement affirmative legal strategies to advance workers' rights and strengthen worker organizing
- Support worker organizing campaigns through research, legal advice and review, action support, and know-your-rights education
- Collaborate with local, state, and national partners on enforcement strategy and policy initiatives
- Train, mentor, and supervise staff attorneys, law clerks, interns, and volunteers
- Oversee a monthly Workers' Rights Clinic in Ontario
- Collaborate with the Legal Director in developing and strengthening relationships with law schools, the plaintiffs' bar, and other organizations to partner in litigation, internship and fellowship opportunities, and pro bono support
- Collaborate with the Legal Director to administer and manage programs within the Legal Department, and to track and report data and deliverables
Qualifications:
- Admitted and in good standing with the California Bar, or willing to seek admission at earliest opportunity after hire
- Demonstrated commitment to social justice and workers' rights
- Excellent research, analytical, writing, and verbal communication skills
- Creative, adaptable, and able to work independently and collaboratively in a challenging and fast-paced environment
- Knowledge of and experience with movement lawyering principles strongly preferred
- Experience with administrative hearings, plaintiff-side employment litigation, and settlement negotiations strongly preferred
- Spanish language fluency is a plus
- Staff Attorney candidates should have 0-4 years of post-bar experience. Managing Attorney candidates should have 5+ years of post-bar experience, along with experience managing attorneys, fellows, or interns
