An American Company has an exciting opportunity for a compensation and benefits attorney to join its legal department. This position will provide advice and counsel to Human Resources professionals and business partners on compensation, benefits and also assist the VP, ESG on certain ESG-related matters, including pay equity, DE&I policies, and ESG compliance and regulatory matters.

The position, which can be based in Farmington, CT or fully remote within the U.S., provides an excellent opportunity for growth and advancement. This person must act with the highest level of integrity and business and personal ethical standards in all aspects of job performance and will report to the Senior Vice President & Associate General Counsel, Compensation & Benefits.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Provide support in areas such as the executive compensation disclosures in the proxy statement and other securities filings, long-term incentives (including international equity), talent acquisition
  • Provide legal support related to the design and operation of health and welfare plans, including related to HIPAA and the Affordable Care Act compliance
  • Analyze and advise on evolving pertinent tax and securities regulations
  • Provide legal support related to the design and operation of defined contribution plans, both qualified and nonqualified, including on IRC Section 409A, ERISA and Secure 2.0 knowledge, and serve as secretary and counsel to An American Company' fiduciary benefit plan committee
  • Provide legal support to HR on Puerto Rico defined benefit plan and defined contribution plans and Guam defined contribution plan. Assist HR with Canadian benefit plan issues and Canadian benefit plan committee.
  • Provide legal support for HR and benefits for matters throughout the employee lifecycle, including in matters related to new hires, in-service employees, and departures
  • Draft plan documentation and participant communications
  • Negotiate service provider agreements
  • Provide support with pay equity and DE&I initiatives and help with ESG regulatory compliance
  • Establish and maintain relationships, credibility and trust with clients, stakeholders, legal team members and other colleagues/business partners

To be successful in this role you will need:
  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school required
  • Minimum 5 years of related experience, including practice in a law firm
  • Strong collaboration skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated leadership managing multiple priorities while consistently meeting time-sensitive deadlines
  • Interest in ESG (prior ESG experience preferred, but not required)
  • Knowledge of ERISA
  • Must thrive in team-oriented but fast-paced environment
