Description:

Responsible for providing legal analysis and consultation to business partners on impacts in an environment that is continuously evolving. The Associate Attorney will partner closely with the business to determine its ultimate goals, assess risk, and provide creative solutions.
  • Proactively identifies and analyzes legal issues and risks presents clear opinions, advice and recommendations, and helps ensure legal compliance across the full spectrum of the enterprise.
  • Drafts a variety of legal documents and memos, opinions, and pleadings where appropriate, with direction from the attorney or senior attorney on more complex matters.
  • Serves as internal counsel for substantive areas of law as required, with ability to quickly learn unfamiliar areas of law.
  • Develops and maintains productive working relationship with business partners
  • Assist business partners with identifying and evaluating business objectives, legal risks, and liabilities and provide support and counsel beyond strictly legal advice.

Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctor degree in Law required.
  • Must be a member in good standing with the State Bar of Michigan or possess the ability to become a member upon being hired.
  • Up to 6 years of previous experience.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and in a team environment.
  • Highly developed sense of ethics, integrity, discretion and judgment.
  • Ability to develop rapport and engender confidence with business partners.
  • Strong written communication skills, including the ability to provide clear legal analysis and opinions on matters.
  • Strong verbal communication skills, as is necessary for negotiation and to effectively present information and respond to questions from regulators, business partners, management and third parties.
  • Ability to effectively work in a fast-paced environment with frequently changing priorities, deadlines, and workloads that can be variable for long periods of time.
  • Working knowledge of analyzing, interpreting and writing contracts, interpreting statutes, governmental regulations, general business and legal periodicals, professional journals and technical procedures.

Litigation:
  • Working knowledge of Michigan Court Rules and agency procedures required.
  • Experience with reviewing and interpreting federal and state laws, regulations and other guidance required.
  • Working knowledge of HIPAA and ERISA rules and regulations preferred.
  • Ability to translate legal conditions into lay terms and effectively communicates basic legal principles to business client required.
  • Experience required in drafting complaints, answers, affirmative defenses, subpoena and discovery request responses and objections, as well as motions to dismiss/summary judgment, and discovery motions.
  • Ability to appear in courts, occasionally out of state, and administrative agencies on routine matters.
