Description:

This position prosecutes and defends assigned civil and criminal cases and provides legal counsel andadvice to county departments. An incumbent in this position may be designated “Assistant CountyAttorney II”.

Examples of Duties:
  • Develops plans for and prepares civil and criminal litigation.
  • Researches laws and legal precedents to provide guidance to county employees and departments.
  • Prepares briefs for public information act requests.
  • Appears in court on behalf of A Government Entity; represents the county before District and County courts.
  • Drafts motions, briefs, letters and memoranda.
  • Prepares items for approval on the Commissioners Court agenda; presents items before theCommissioner's Court.
  • Represents county departments before the Civil Service Commission.
  • Represents county departments in regards to employee complaints filed with the Texas WorkforceCommission.
  • Conducts legal research and drafts legal opinions.
  • Prosecutes juvenile cases as assigned; manages case intake and determines whether or not to proceedwith charges; prepares and files petitions, orders, motions and documents; interviews witnesses andvictims; negotiates agreements; attends juvenile detention hearings.
  • Manages Family and Protective Services cases as assigned; represents the department in all legalproceedings; reviews with case workers; ensures that the best interests of the children are met;prepares and files motions, orders and petitions.
  • Attends Mental Health Committee hearings and represents the State of Texas.
  • Performs any other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • Graduation from an accredited school of law.
  • Must have five years experience.
  • Current membership in the State Bar of Texas.
