NPCA’s Sun Coast office is seeking a Legal Intern to work on legal and policy issues relevant to our Everglades Restoration and Marine

Programs. Specific project topics are listed below. This is a part-time Summer internship (up to 25 hours per week) with a flexible schedule available as a volunteer position or unpaid with the opportunity for course credit.

Everglades National Park and Florida Bay Restoration
NPCA has long been involved in efforts to protect and restore America’s Everglades and solve Florida’s ongoing water crisis. Working with state and federal agencies, elected leaders, and allied stakeholders in the community, NPCA leads advocacy efforts to secure restoration funding and advance projects that deliver clean, freshwater to the Southern Everglades and the waters of the Florida Keys. This position will allow a passionate individual the chance to learn about issues facing the Everglades, participate in advocacy meetings, draft position statements, and provide legal memos. Project focus may also include evaluating climate impacts and resiliency
efforts impacting national parks in Florida.

Tasks may include but are not limited to:
  • Attend agency and community meetings on Everglades restoration
  • Coordinate and participate in advocacy meetings with elected officials and staff
  • Research economic and ecological impacts of planned restoration efforts
  • Draft position statements, legal memos, blog posts, and fact sheets
  • Research about climate change impacts and solutions in Florida and at the global scale
Coral Reef and Fisheries Protection
NPCA is committed to protecting and restoring coral reef habitat and fish populations in our marine national parks and surrounding protected areas. We are also dedicated to ensuring healthy, vibrant marine and coastal areas in national parks throughout the Sun Coast Region, which includes Florida, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, and Louisiana.

Tasks may include but are not limited to:
  • Support efforts to protect coral reefs and marine wildlife
  • in Biscayne National Park, specifically through the implementation of
  • Biscayne’s Fishery Management Plan
  • Assist in efforts to promote conservation and marine zoning
  • in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS) through the
  • implementation of the Restoration Blueprint
  • Work with agency staff to obtain relevant updates on marine
  • issues throughout the Sun Coast Region
  • Write comment letters, conduct research and design media content
  • for relevant campaigns
  • Coordinate efforts with community partners/organizations
Biscayne and Turkey Point Nuclear Power Plant
NPCA is committed to protecting the health of Biscayne National Park and the surrounding environment from potential threats posed by the current and future operations of Turkey Point Nuclear Power Plant.

Tasks may include but are not limited to:
  • Analyze remediation and monitoring plans and legal requirements
  • for cooling canal system contamination with a specific focus on how they
  • address contamination in Biscayne National Park
  • Monitor Nuclear Regulatory Commission permitting process for
  • the subsequent re-licensing of existing nuclear reactors
  • Examine National Pollutants Discharge Elimination System permitting
  • process
  • Work with agency staff to obtain relevant updates
  • Write comment letters, conduct research, and design media
  • content
  • Coordinate efforts with community partners/organizations
Qualifications/Requirements (i.e., education, technical skills):
  • Current Law student
  • Strong writing, research and editing skills
  • Strategic thinking skills with the ability to perform
  • thorough research and produce concise memos and reports
  • Advanced communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Enthusiasm, positive attitude, and strong interest in
  • national park and environmental issues
