Staff Counsel Managing Attorney

What you need to know:
The Managing Attorney is responsible for the strategic leadership of the organization to utilize an array of litigation resolution strategies to achieve the best possible outcome for internal claims customers and clients
  • Oversee the running of the Staff Counsel law office and remote operations inclusive of all lines of business including case assignments; file monitoring; supervision; performance management; Quality Assurance; maintenance of E&O avoidance processes; business protocol compliance; attorney evaluations; professional development; training; hiring ; reporting and budgeting
  • Provide in-depth and practical legal representation from suit inception through trial. Participate in the most complex legal actions. Will maintain a small caseload
  • Manages a local and remote territory; capable of marketing and developing metrics for expansion of territory
  • Closely coordinates with Practice Group Lead and Legal Support Unit Manager to communicate and effectuate organizational goals.
  • Ensures that companyorgproject milestones and goals are met. Responsible for Total Cost of Claim savings and improvement with a focus on case duration, indemnity and legal spend
  • Provide clients and claims professional’s high quality and cost-effective legal services. Provide an innovative framework of value-added services that are responsive to the cost control needs of clients
  • Lead team to work directly with clients and claims on litigation and pre litigation investigations and discovery. Implement and improve early investigation procedures, including evidence and document retention strategies that save time and exposure. Focus on moving cases through discovery and to resolution as quickly and effectively as possible
  • Oversee Staff Counsel team that can skillfully handle the defense, adjudication, arbitration, mediation, settlement negotiation and trial to verdict, whenever necessary.
  • Management of accurate metrics that effectively capture litigation management performance with a strong concentration on Total Cost of Claim
  • Responsible for timely and accurate reporting in compliance with litigation management guidelines and Practice Group Lead requirements
  • Engages with internal and external customer and develops customer facing relationships with brokers
  • Capable of training and marketing clients, brokers and claims partners
  • Keeps abreast of changes in the law and provides training of attorneys and staff on same

What we are looking for:
  • Minimum 12 years line of business experience, with 8 or more in insurance specific and 3 years’ experience managing attorneys preferred
  • Strong and effective communications and ability to interact effectively across the organization and with Senior Management
  • Detailed knowledge of rules, statutes, regulations, and case law; ability to develop manage and monitor strategies; knowledge of rules of evidence, court rules and procedures
  • Ability to develop pre-trial and trial strategies; knowledge of rules of evidence, court rules and procedures; ability to advise core and associate staff on technical issues; ability to litigate the most complex cases
  • JD Required; Must be admitted and able to practice Law in the required state; must be in good standing with no history of grievances
