Staff Attorney, Anti-Trafficking Initiative (Temporary)

Position Overview
The Staff Attorney is a key position that provides legal services for survivors of human trafficking in immigration, criminal justice advocacy, and vacatur cases. The Staff Attorney ensures comprehensive, trauma-informed, and holistic services for our clients through direct representation, case management assistance, and community education and outreach.

  • Provides legal representation for victims of human trafficking, domestic abuse, and/or gender-based violence, along with their eligible family members and potential derivatives.
  • Mentors law students, volunteers, and interns on legal matters presented by clients.
  • Advocates for clients in a wide variety of legal and social systems, including immigration, criminal justice, landlord/tenant, consumer credit, public benefits, etc.
  • Collaborates with clinicians, attorneys, health care providers, local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, and district attorney’s offices, and any other organization, to secure the best results for our clients.
  • Together with the Director of the Anti-Trafficking Initiative, supports relevant grant reporting efforts.
  • Performs any other department or agency-related duties or special projects as directed by the Director and Deputy Director of the Anti-Trafficking Initiative.

  • JD Degree Required;
  • Admission to a State Bar, preferably NY;
  • Experience working in the fields of gender-based violence and direct immigration representation required;
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience practicing immigration and/or criminal law, preferably in the public interest sector;
  • Extensive knowledge of federal and state laws that pertain to human trafficking, especially immigration and criminal law;
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, public speaking, and leadership skills;
  • Excellent judgment;
  • Bilingual English and a relevant community language (e.g., Spanish, Mandarin);
  • Proficient writing, research, and analytical skills;
  • Ability to work independently and under pressure;
  • Deep understanding of and ability to work well with people of diverse national, ethnic, cultural, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds; and
  • Energetic and passionate about Sanctuary’s mission of ending gender violence and human trafficking.
