Senior Staff Counsel

The Position:
The Senior Staff Counsel will work closely with VP – Associate General Counsel in support of the Legal Services Department’s overall goal to provide timely, accurate and effective legal counsel to the organization and in particular to SECU’s four subsidiaries and the private foundation. In addition, the Senior Staff Counsel will assist the VP – Associate General Counsel with employee benefits matters. The Senior Staff Counsel will be expected to provide a variety of general corporate and legal services in support of SECU’s enterprise functions, subsidiary needs and employee benefits areas. The Senior Staff Counsel will also assist the VP – Associate General Counsel with coordination of outside counsel for specialized matters.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist VP – Associate General Counsel in providing legal counsel and services in support of SECU’s enterprise functions and employee benefits matters.
  • Assist VP – Associate General Counsel in providing legal counsel and services to all SECU subsidiaries and the private foundation.
  • Assist VP – Associate General Counsel with coordination of outside counsel for specialized matters.
  • Maintain all necessary licenses as required for the position, including satisfying all continuing education requirements.
  • Accept other duties and responsibilities that are assigned.

Requirements:
  • Juris Doctor degree from accredited law school.
  • License in good standing to practice law in North Carolina or ability to quickly obtain.
  • 3+ years of law firm or in-house experience advising regulated entities.
  • Ability to adhere to the work schedule and attendance policy established by manager.
  • Ability to speak English fluently.
  • Must complete SECU’s Basic Module Program requirements within 24 months of hire date as a condition of employment.

Preferred Skills and Experience:
  • Experience as a Senior Staff Counsel or related role at a larger credit union or bank, or as an attorney with experience advising regulated industries, preferably with regulator examination experience. Experience with general business and corporate law skills.
  • Ability to provide timely, accurate and practical written and verbal legal counsel on complex legal matters in a fast-paced business environment.
  • Ability to confidently and competently address wide range of general corporate matters and partner with outside counsel when appropriate for specialized matters to best provide legal services to the organization.
  • Knowledge of and experience in researching and applying state and federal statutes, laws, rules, regulations and agency guidance affecting SECU and its subsidiaries.
  • Appreciation of reputation risk.

Job Environment:
  • Office setting with physical proximity to other employees. Some background noise from other employees, copy machine, and telephone.

Physical Demands:
  • Must be able to comprehend phone calls and carry out verbal and written instructions.
  • May require a substantial amount of sitting.
  • Use hands and fingers to press keys on a computer keyboard to enter or retrieve information or press telephone key pad and lift receiver.
  • Must be able to lift 5 pounds.
