About the role Canva is seeking a business-minded, technology focused lawyer to serve as our first US based counsel, who will take an entrepreneurial approach and serve as a key voice in the room providing advice to our growing Teams, Enterprise and Education (TEE) team in Austin, TX. You will help Canva to continue its growth and success in the US, with a focus on TEE products including Canva for Enterprise product, Canva for Education and strategic partnerships. You will join a dynamic global legal team working on a variety of innovative legal issues across the entire company. You will be required to leverage your expertise, good judgement and strong business sense to help us grow Canva in the US, while assessing and mitigating legal risk.
What you'll do:
Act as the primary legal advisor to our US-based TEE team, including with regard to local compliance and setup of a physical office in Austin, TX.
Review, draft and negotiate commercial agreements including for Canva for Enterprise, Canva for Education, reseller agreements and other strategic partnerships.
Respond promptly to legal requests from the enterprise sales team in the US, and implement scalable and effective processes to effectively manage these requests as we scale.
Keep current on relevant industry standards, laws, and regulations.
Develop and deliver training and scalable written guidance to the TEE team.
What we're looking for:
You have a strong technical background and significant hands-on experience in SaaS contracting at a rapidly growing technology company.
You are excited to roll up your sleeves, learn the business and proactively identify and analyze opportunities and risks.
You have excellent communication skills and can make complex communications simple.
You are comfortable participating in cross-functional and distributed teams.
You are a pragmatic, business minded lawyer who wants to help build our business and grow a legal team in Austin, TX.
You are risk aware, not risk averse.
You are a collaborative team player with strong interpersonal skills and a collegial attitude.
Admission to one bar (California preferred)
8+ years practicing law (though more experience is welcome)
Hands on in-house experience at a rapidly growing SaaS business.
