This position fulfills the responsibilities of two distinct roles: Pro Bono Manager and Supervising Attorney of JDC’s Community Organization Representation Project (CORP).
The Pro Bono Manager position suits a dynamic person who enjoys mobilizing people and cultivating relationships. The position represents JDC among peer groups, and works with a variety of people, including law firm partners, executive staff of other nonprofit organizations, and clients seeking legal advice. The Pro Bono Manager understands barriers to justice for low-income people and effectively organizes volunteers to fill the justice gap. The position works with the Director/Managing Attorney of Pro Bono Legal Services to lead recruiting and retaining attorneys, law students, paralegals, interpreters and other volunteers who support JDC’s programs. The Pro Bono Manager appropriately markets JDC’s volunteer opportunities to maximize engagement by small and large law firms, in-house counsel, and solo practitioners. The Pro Bono Manager also oversees volunteer recognition activities. This position supervises JDC’s Volunteer Coordinator, who organizes legal clinics and supports the Pro Bono Manager’s recruitment activities.
The CORP Supervising Attorney oversees business/transactional legal services to other nonprofit organizations. Though CORP volunteers are attorneys experienced in business law, it is helpful for the Supervising Attorney to grasp fundamentals of the most common legal areas for client organizations: corporate formation and governance, employment, tax, intellectual property, and real estate. This position does not teach or supervise transactional law. The position oversees project administration, including client intake, evaluates matters to issue spot and refer appropriately, and manages clinics and trainings for nonprofits.
Candidate must be a member of the California State Bar in good standing, ideally with some experience in transactional law practice. Demonstrated commitment to serving low-income communities is preferred.
