Duties
Summary
This position is located in the Office of General Counsel of U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), the U.S. Government's development finance bank. The successful candidate will serve as an Assistant General Counsel and advise on the legal and policy aspects of all of DFC's programs, with a primary focus on the political risk insurance program.

Responsibilities
Political risk insurance legal work includes (i) advising on the legal aspects of political risk coverages, including expropriation, arbitral award default, denial of justice and specialized capital markets products that insure against sovereign and subsovereign risk; (ii) reviewing, drafting and/or negotiating all insurance and reinsurance transaction documents, including claims cooperation agreements; (iii) advising on advocacy efforts in respect of potential claims before host country governments and state-owned enterprises; and (iv) leading claim determination reviews and analyses. Secondary focus in one or more of DFC's finance, equity, and investment funds programs would include (i) reviewing, drafting and/or negotiating all transaction documents; (ii) monitoring existing transactions; (iii) and restructuring or collecting on defaulted loans. The types of financing vary from project finance, infrastructure loans, loans to SMEs and microfinance institutions, to loans to private equity funds. DFC's equity investment program includes direct investment in portfolio companies as well as limited partner investments private equity funds. Projects are always located in a developing country.

Travel Required
Occasional travel - You may be expected to travel for this position.

Qualifications
  • You must meet the following requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement.
  • Basic Requirements: Applicants must (1) be a graduate of an accredited law school with an LL.B. or J.D.; (2) be a current member of a bar with a valid license to practice law in a state, territory of the United States, District of Columbia, or Commonwealth of Puerto Rico; and (3) meet all specialized experience requirements as described below.
  • Specialized experience includes: 5-8 years of experience advising on legal and policy matters regarding political risk coverages, including expropriation, arbitral award default, denial of justice and specialized capital markets products that insure against sovereign and subsovereign risk; reviewing, drafting and/or negotiating all insurance and reinsurance transaction documents, including claims cooperation agreements; (iii) advising on advocacy efforts in respect of potential claims before host country governments and state-owned enterprises; and (iv) leading claim determination reviews and analyses.

Education
Applicants must be a graduate of an accredited law school with an LL.B. or J.D. An official transcript will be required if you are selected. In addition, if selected, you must provide proof of bar membership.
