About the position: Tahirih Justice Center stands alone as the only national, multi-city organization providing a broad range of direct legal and social services, policy advocacy, and training and education to protect immigrant survivors fleeing gender-based violence. Tahirih’s Baltimore office seeks legal interns to help us serve immigrant survivors of gender-based violence by supporting our dynamic and holistic immigration and family law programs. Duties may include:
Assisting with Representation in Immigration Law Matters: Assist in the preparation of briefs, memoranda, and applications before the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service and the Baltimore Immigration Court involving asylum, Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) petitions, U visas, T visas, and Special Immigrant Juvenile Status petitions
Assisting with Representation in Family Law Matters: Assist in the preparation for trial, drafting of pleadings and discovery, and casework involving custody, divorce, protective orders, and predicate orders for Special Immigrant Juvenile Status
Case Management: Craft case summaries, track important court dates and deadlines, process referrals, communicate with clients, and other legal administrative duties as needed
Research and writing: Research the law, country conditions and psycho-social services to support case work and clients; draft legal memoranda and briefs
Enrollment in law school.
Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills.
Experience and/or interest in working with immigrant communities and/or victims of trauma preferred.
Language skills highly desired, particularly Spanish.
Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States.
Candidates must be available for at least 20 hours/week.
In order to experience a well-rounded internship, all legal interns are required to commit a minimum of 12 weeks.
