Freedom Now is seeking a full-time Legal Director for its work on behalf of individual prisoners of conscience and issues relating to arbitrary detention and rule of law. The Legal Director will be responsible for a portfolio of cases and will assist in the development of new cases and programs. Successful candidates will be passionate about advancing human rights and the rule of law through international advocacy efforts aimed at freeing individual prisoners. Lawyers with Freedom Now thrive in a small, at times fast paced, office where a premium is placed on coordination internally and with outside organizations and partners.

This position will be staffed in our Washington, DC office. The salary and benefits package associated with the position will be commensurate with experience.

  • Lead organization’s legal advocacy, including litigation before international or regional human rights tribunals, strategic filings with UN bodies, legal reports on targeted human rights issues, and legal capacity-building trainings.
  • Research and develop prospective cases and projects;
  • Develop and implement strategic human rights litigation before international and regional human rights courts;
  • Utilize human rights monitoring mechanisms to press for clients’ release and spotlight relevant human rights abuses;
  • Supervise and undertake research and analysis of domestic, regional or international law for all Freedom Now reports, publications and legal briefs;
  • Assist in the development and implementation of Freedom Now’s US-based political and public relations advocacy initiatives;
  • Draft advocacy materials related to cases and other programmatic work, including opinion articles, press releases, briefing papers, congressional testimony and letters, and in-depth thematic reports;
  • Cultivate and build relationships with key policy makers, officials, NGOs, media outlets, and other influential stakeholders;
  • Represent Freedom Now at public events, meetings, and to the media;
  • Recruit and coordinate the work of law firms, volunteer lawyers, and law students; and
  • Assist the Executive Director with fundraising and development tasks, to help provide project funding.

Required Skills and Experience:
  • Degree in law;
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting human rights and the rule of law;
  • A minimum of five years of professional experience in international human rights law and advocacy;
  • Experience litigating before regional or international human rights courts;
  • Exceptionally strong communication, research, writing, and editing skills and the ability to turn around high quality work quickly;
  • Ability to develop and implement strategic litigation and advocacy plans;
  • Familiarity with international human rights mechanisms and institutions;
  • Ability to translate complicated legal matters into laymen’s terms for non-legal audiences;
  • Experience in political engagement and public relations advocacy--established relationships with key US officials, congressional offices and media outlets an asset;
  • Experience managing and directing the work of others, including pro bono volunteers;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, communicating effectively with colleagues and a diverse group of partners;
  • Comfort and ease working with individuals and organizations from all over the world;
  • High levels of ambition, energy, drive, dynamism, determination, and focus;
  • Fluent in English; a second language (Russian or French) highly desirable; and
