The New York State Office of the Attorney General is seeking acriminal prosecutor to serve as Investigative Counselin the newly created Office of Special Investigation (OSI). In June 2020, the New York State Legislature passed legislation codifying and expanding the Governor’s previous Executive Order,granting theOAG the jurisdiction to investigate and potentially prosecute incidents when a police officer or peace officer causes the death of a person. The Investigative Counselposition provides a unique and exciting opportunity to join a team of experiencedfelony and homicide prosecutors, legal support staff, and detective investigators who are workingtogetherto enhancetransparency, strengthenpublic trust in the criminal justice system, and engage and collaborate with external stakeholders and partners.This position will be based in Buffaloand report to the Upstate Supervising Chief.
Candidates for the position of Investigative Counsel must possess the following: A minimum offour(4) yearsof investigative or litigation experience; Prior grand jury and criminal trial experience; Excellent investigative and writing skills(the position requires a great deal ofresearch and writing); On an as-needed basis, the availability to work outside of usual business hours and to traveloutside the county of employment; and Verbal and/or written proficiency in other languages (e.g., Spanish, Mandarin, Russian, Korean, etc.)in addition to Englishis a plus, but not required.Applicants must reside in (or intend to soon become a resident of) New York State and be admitted to practice law in New York State. In addition, the Public Officers Law requires that attorneys in the Office be citizens of the United States. A two (2) year commitment upon being hired is a condition of employment.
