Purpose of Position:
This position will provide senior level professional legal services for protective services cases in litigation, counsel, interpretation of law, research, analysis, mediation and administrative hearings. The selected candidate will be assigned to work with the CYFD specialized Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) unit which is responsible for coordinating and monitoring delivery of child welfare services to Native American children and their families. The candidate will provide legal advice on the requirements of the ICWA to ensure that CYFD is fully compliant with the ICWA and CYFD policies and initiatives around CYFD's work with Native American children and families. The selected candidate will also represent CYFD in ICWA cases in the Second Judicial District ICWA court.

Preference will be given to applicants with experience working with Native American populations and with knowledge of the Indian Child Welfare Act.
Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited school of law and four (4) years of experience in the practice of law. Must be licensed as an attorney by the Supreme Court of New Mexico or qualified to apply for limited practice license (Rules 15-301.1 and 15-301.2 NMRA). Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Pre-employment background investigation is required and is conditional pending results.
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Incumbent will work under stress and frequent time constraints. May be exposed to potentially difficult clients/witnesses. Some statewide travel may be required. Must have own mode of transportation for daily travel.
