Description:
Our firm is dedicated to fighting for justice for our clients. Sharon Appelbaum is a former NYC prosecutor who is not afraid to take on tough cases. We require our attorneys to provide individualized attention and care to each client and their case. The firm specializes in criminal defense including violent crimes, sexual assault crimes, and white collar fraud, among others. We expect our attorneys to communicate regularly with our clients, investigators and experts, and to visit clients in jail on occasion.

We are seeking a part-time Associate Attorney with experience working in criminal law. Strong legal writing and oral advocacy is required. Candidates with jury trial, preliminary hearing, and felony experience are preferred, but a candidate willing to learn will be guided and trained. Candidates must be motivated, able to hit the ground running, and have high quality work. The ideal candidate will be comfortable appearing in court, drafting, writing, and arguing motions, speaking with clients and family members of clients. Out of the box thinking is encouraged. For now, the position is remote, but includes occasional appearances at Los Angeles courthouses, the Santa Monica office, and jails. This position has the opportunity to become full-time.

Responsibilities:
  • Must be able to prioritize tasks and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Prepare for hearings in advance, research potential issues, write and file motions, provide strategic advice
  • Communicate effectively with clients, investigators, and experts * Accept direction from firm lead attorney
  • Maintain a good rapport with clients and treat them and their families with respect
  • Organizational skills and communication skills are necessary for this position
  • Ability to comfortably use all Microsoft Office products
  • Advocate for and secure the best possible outcome for clients
  • Draft and submit motions and other filings on time - meeting internal and external deadlines
  • Arrive at work and court on time (whether it is in person or virtually) in professional and appropriate attire
  • Draft and send subpoenas
  • Make appointments at the clerk’s office to retrieve dockets or other materials

Qualifications:
  • 3-5 years of criminal law experience
  • Strong research and writing skills and oral advocacy skills
  • Must be prepared and punctual
  • Possess a J.D. and be in good standing with the State Bar of CA
  • Willingness to travel throughout Los Angeles County
  • Proficient in webex, Microsoft Teams, Dropbox, Zoom, Excel, Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, Adobe Acrobat or willing to learn
