Department Overview The Law Department provides timely, efficient and business-focused legal services to the company. The Law Department’s substantive legal activities fall in three categories: Litigation, Regulatory, Transactions and Corporate Services.
Position Summary The Counsel will report to the Managing Counsel for Gas and Electric Operations and will be responsible for providing legal support in rulemaking or investigation proceedings at the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) and ratemaking proceedings at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), as well as advice and counsel to Pacific Gas and Electric Company’s Gas, Electric, and Customer Care Operations departments, including assisting in compliance processes.
Represent PG&E and assist Law Department colleagues in regulatory proceedings before the CPUC and FERC, including hearings, workshops, written submissions, and filings. Research and draft pleadings for submission to regulatory bodies in respective proceedings.
Work with the lines of business and Law Department colleagues on legal and regulatory issues. Consult with other attorneys in the Law Department regarding key business and legal issues.
Provide support to operations teams as the business prepares for audits and performs compliance and safety work.
Research, review, interpret, and provide counsel on relevant CPUC General Orders, and CPUC, FERC, and California Independent System Operator (CAISO) tariffs and rules.
Support risk and compliance teams in Gas, Electric, and Customer Care operations with identified legal issues in connection with risk assessment and compliance activities.
Under supervision, manages and coordinates outside counsel handling specific proceedings or issues.
Juris Doctor Degree from an Accredited Law School
Licensed to practice law in California or qualify for California registered in-house counsel status
Law Bar Admission, US
Legal experience, post- JD-Juris Doctor, or other job-related, 8 years
Experience as Attorney, 2 years
Ability to travel up to 10 percent of working time
Experience advising clients in the energy industry, including regulatory and transactional
Ability to represent PG&E in proceedings before regulatory bodies.
Competence in evaluating legal issues and drafting and providing clear advice and counsel.
Capable of working independently and as a team member.
Experience directly advising clients and ability to provide a high level of client service.
Ability to set priorities and to respond to changing demands from multiple internal and external sources.
Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
