Description:
Texas Legal Services Center (TLSC) has an open contract position for a part-time Contract Unemployment Benefits Attorney. This attorney would be a part of the Self-Represented Litigants Project (SRLP) Team which oversees TexasLawHelp.org.

This position is responsible for providing legal assistance to eligible clients, creating legal content for TexasLawHelp.org, and participating in various other program activities related to their field.

Those in this position are expected to maintain the highest ethical and professional standards as a member of the State Bar, adhere to the ABA Standards for Civil Legal Services Providers, as well as embrace and support Texas Legal Service Center’s (TLSC) overall mission. We also expect compliance with all grant requirements, regulations, standards, policies, and confidentiality requirements.

The part-time Unemployment Benefits Attorney position is funded by a grant that ends December 31, 2020. SRLP hours of operation are Monday - Friday from 7:00 AM – 6:00 PM. Actual work schedules for these positions will be discussed with selected candidates.

Duties
  • Provide high-quality legal advice, assistance, and referrals to eligible clients, including through TexasLawHelp.org LiveChat, in a patient, compassionate, culturally-sensitive, and trauma-informed manner.
  • Conduct intake interviews, confirm eligibility for services, and check for conflicts of interest according to TLSC policy.
  • Identify the need for publications to assist self-represented litigants for TexasLawHelp.org.
  • Ensure TexasLawHelp.org is accurate, updated, and free of spelling and grammar errors while being accessible and able to be easily understood by the general public.
  • Develop tools for SRLP clients and the general public to assist with form completion and filing court documents.
  • Draft and update video, legal information publications, tools, interactive forms, and print forms for TexasLawHelp.org.
  • Coordinate projects between SRLP, within the practice area group, within TLSC, and organizations outside of TLSC, including Texas Access to Justice Foundation grantees.
  • Train and lead TLSC staff, law students, volunteers, and interns for TexasLawHelp.org LiveChat and the development of content for the website.
  • Ensure all client, project, and computer files are maintained in an orderly manner.
  • Provide all information needed/requested for TLSC-reporting in a prompt manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements
  • J.D. Degree
  • Licensure by the Supreme Court of Texas
  • Current knowledge and expertise of the law and legal system (especially in areas that impact family law)
  • Advance level project management skills
  • High-level organization skills
  • Strong time management and attention to detail skills
  • Exceptional verbal, listening, and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in (or the ability to learn) LegalServer (TLSC’s case management system), Adobe, Microsoft Office products, G-Suite, and social media tools
  • Understanding of grant requirements and associated reporting needs
  • Ability to travel to remote locations
  • Ability to work with clients in a patient, trauma-informed, and non-judgmental manner
  • Ability to learn new technologies to carry out job functions
  • Ability to enter information into the system accurately

Preferred Experience
Minimum one year of unemployment benefits law experience
