Steptoe, an Am100 law firm, is seeking a Conflicts Lawyer to join our Conflicts & Intake Compliance department. This is an opportunity to join an innovative and collaborative group. As part of a team of skilled lawyers and staff, you will work alongside partners to better understand their business needs.
Under the direction of the firm’s Director of Conflicts and Intake Compliance, you will support the firm-wide new business intake process, lateral hiring conflicts clearance process, and related conflicts and business intake processes.
This position is also responsible for the following:
Identify, analyze, and resolve or make recommendation for the resolution of potential conflicts of interest related to new firm business.
Review and draft conflict waivers, and review both engagement terms and outside counsel guidelines.
Work with the Director of CIC on conflicts analysis and resolution as needed.
Collaborate with Ethics Partner and Office of the General Counsel on other ethics related projects and questions.
Work with partners to negotiate and draft waivers, disclosures, and engagement letters.
Conduct legal research related to conflicts of interest, new business intake, and firm policies related to the same.
Prepare communications to lawyers and others, clearly identifying all potential issues found in conflict reports to facilitate clearance process.
Maintain a solid understanding of current policies and firm best practices, and act as a resource in answering questions from other firm personnel with respect to the new business intake process, and policies.
Qualified candidates should possess the following:
Juris Doctor (J.D.) and admission the DC bar (active and in good standing).
A minimum of 2 years law firm (or other professional services firm) experience in a lawyer role is preferred.
At least 2 years conflicts work experience in a law firm, and legal, writing, or research experience related to the skills and duties of the position as described, strongly preferred.
Working knowledge of the DC Rules of Professional Conduct is required.
Preference given to candidate with familiarity with computer systems in use at law firms including business intake systems and research systems such as Moody’s, Bureau van Dijk (Orbis, Compliance Catalyst, World Compliance), LexisNexis and others.
