Cold Case Prosecutor

Anchorage, AK
Full Time
The Office of Special Prosecutions is offering a unique opportunity to specialize in the challenging area of cold case homicide and sexual assault prosecutions. Many of these cold cases occurred decades ago and have long remained unsolved; however, advancements in forensic science and genetic genealogy have provided new avenues for investigation that are increasingly providing the evidence needed for these cases to be solved. The position is located in Anchorage but this prosecutor will handle cases across the state. This prosecutor will work closely with the Alaska State Trooper Cold Case Investigative Unit, the Alaska State Crime Lab and the Anchorage Police Department Cold Case Unit.

This position will also serve as the Department of Law’s point person for the Alaska Department of Public Safety’s Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) grant and will work closely with the SAKI investigator and Crime Lab in investigating cases under this grant. This prosecutor will regularly be asked to work closely with and provide advice to law enforcement, mentor less experienced attorneys, and conduct trainings. Along with cold case homicide and sexual assault prosecutions, this position will occasionally review officer involved shootings and handle other cases around the state as needed.

To be successful in this position, you will need to be familiar with Alaska’s criminal justice system and laws, have extensive trial experience and a history of handling complex criminal prosecutions. This position will require travel throughout the state, including for trials, which may last for several weeks.

Salary will be determined by the legal background and experience of the selected candidate. Regular salary increases are provided every 1-2 years. A comprehensive state benefits package is provided, including health, dental, vision and life insurance; a retirement account in which the state matches pre-tax contributions of up to 5% of your gross eligible salary; a generous Supplemental Benefits System in which the state provides a 6.13% match of your gross pay (this system takes the place of social security for State of Alaska employees); options for deferred compensation; 21 days of personal leave for new employees, which increases over time; and assistance with moving expenses.
