The attorney is responsible for providing daily legal support on South Carolina civil litigation matters, including but not limited to consumer and commercial debt collection and litigation. This position also involves document review, legal research and other projects as required by the Firm. The attorney is also required to appear extensively on behalf of the firm in courts throughout South Carolina (and in North Carolina if licensed in both states), for motion hearings, arbitrations and trials. With the exception of the initial training period, this role can be performed on mostly a remote basis.

Summary of essential job functions:
  • Frequent travel, access to reliable transportation, must be diligent, focused and possess the ability to prepare thoroughly for numerous hearings at a time.
  • Must be articulate and adept at adjusting to rapidly changing situations in a fast-paced and high pressure legal environment.
  • Communicates regularly with court officials, staff and attorneys in an ethical, knowledgeable and precise manner.
  • Reviews documents for relevancy, accuracy, redactions, identification of documents for further review, and to ensure they meet statutory and regulatory requirements.
  • Keeps informed as to changes in statutes, case law and regulations, including those related to developments in state and federal laws and regulations applicable to the Firm’s practice.
  • Interprets state and federal statutes, rulings and regulations impacting the firm’s practice and advises operations as appropriate.
  • Assists with FDCPA defense litigation and compliance issues as needed.
  • Responds swiftly to client inquiries, and does so in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Understands and adheres to all client guidelines, the applicable Rules of Professional Conduct and Rules of Civil Procedure.
  • Understands and possesses a working knowledge of the Firm’s JST software program.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge of federal, state and local laws. Ability to analyze statutes, case law, formulate litigation strategy and to provide appropriate recommendations. Advanced knowledge and thorough understanding of state and federal collection law and regulatory requirements is preferred.
  • Represents the firm and its clients in all legal proceedings, attends court hearings, arbitrations, depositions, mediations and trials when required.
  • Experience in writing, reviewing, and editing pleadings, motions, briefs, memoranda and reports in all phases of litigation, as well as with correspondence, articles, and other documents.
  • Maintains an impeccable professional appearance and presents a positive attitude and image at all times, both within the firm and to the public.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and research skills related to the retrieval and organization of high volumes of information.
  • Excels in time management, with a proven ability to maintain an exceptional level of productivity in a high pressure and challenging environment.
  • Interacts exceptionally well with people throughout all organizational levels of the firm.
  • Thinks globally by way of strategic planning and overall risk management.
  • Effectively responds to all manner of inquiries and/or tasks presented by the Firm staff and attorneys, defending Attorneys, and with general public subject to applicable statutes and regulations.

  • Membership in the South Carolina State Bar as an attorney qualified and licensed to practice law is required. Additional membership in the North Carolina State Bar is preferred but not required.
  • J.D. from accredited law school.
  • Bi-lingual in English and Spanish preferred but not required.
  • Some civil litigation experience is preferred but not required.
  • Valid SC or NC State driver’s license

This position will require a varying degree of substantial travel up to 80%, for numerous legal proceedings.
