Definition: Performs responsible representation of the Department of Public Health and Human Services, Child and Family Services Division (CFS) in the office of the County Attorney, including the handling of major and complex litigation, and occasional other civil or criminal responsibilities as assigned. After four years, at the discretion of the County Attorney, employee may be advanced to Attorney III status based on demonstrated competencies.

Minimum Qualification Requirements: Requires a Juris Doctor degree. Requires two years of progressively responsible experience in the practice of law, with a desire that a significant portion of which has been in child abuse and neglect litigation.

Special Requirements: Must be licensed to practice law in Montana.

Representative Examples Of Work: Reviews new requests for filing by CFS. Provides legal counsel to CFS. Provides work assignments and direction for para-legal staff in conjunction with the County Attorney Office Administrator. Works with multidisciplinary groups addressing child abuse and neglect issues. Provides training sessions to CFS supervisors and case workers on legal matters. Reviews, evaluates, prepares and conducts litigation on behalf of CFS. Responsible for all phases of litigation. Directs and supervises legal interns. May provide training for other county departments. Responsible for CFS calendar assuring that deadlines are met, and that child abuse and neglect cases are prepared for scheduled hearings and trial. Makes appearances for other attorneys as requested and when necessary.

Physical/Environmental Demands: The work requires little physical activity and the employee commonly remains in an office setting. May be exposed to stressful situations. Requires employee to be on call periodically.
