As a member of the US Legal function, you will provide legal support for Scandinavian Tobacco Group companies in the United States, including Cigars International, the largest online retailer of premium cigars in the United States, General Cigar Co., the largest distributor and manufacturer of handmade cigars in the United States, and Scandinavian Tobacco Group Lane, a US distributor of its own brands of roll-your-own tobacco, pipe tobacco and small cigars. You will be drafting and reviewing contracts for many different purposes in co-operation with the business and you will be involved in various cross-functional project teams such as sales & marketing, retail, operations, finance or the management team, thus contributing to the success of the business. Together with other members of the legal team you will be involved in the ongoing task of ensuring compliance across the group.
Our tasks include all such legal matters that arise in a large business in a regulated industry, including:
Contracts with commercial and other partners as well as suppliers across the world
Advising (and occasional training of) colleagues in state and federal legal and regulatory matters such as
Marketing and advsertising
competition and antitrust
selected employment and labor matters
Corporate law, e.g. in corporate structural changes, mergers and acquisitions
Commercial real estate
Coordinate with and manage outside counsel
The ideal candidate will have:
A Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree, plus current license to practice law in either Pennsylvania or Virginia (or eligibility for admission by waiver)
3+ years of experience working as an attorney in a law firm and/or government agency, preferably with additional in-house experience
An ability to provide legal counseling with a business mindset, work across functions, and provide practical business-minded solutions
Self-motivation, self-discipline, and be results-oriented with an ability to manage priorities and workflow
The ability to work independently as well as part of a team and handle both small and large matters with equal effectiveness and enthusiasm
Experience focused on commercial law and ideally including experience in one or more of the following areas: management-side employment law, commercial real estate, contracts, and regulatory matters (e.g., FDA, OSHA)
The ability to develop substantive expertise relating to law and regulations pertaining to the cigar/pipe tobacco industry
Excellent research and writing skills
The ability to interpret and communicate (verbally and in writing) the substance of legal matters to individuals at all levels of the organization, including those without a legal background
The position will be based out of our Bethlehem, PA office or Richmond, VA office, with occasional travel required.
