Minimum Qualifications
  • A J.D. degree from a ABA accredited law school and admission to the Michigan Bar or the ability to practice in-house for a Michigan company.
  • 4+ years of experience as a practicing attorney, with a focus on mortgage servicing.
  • Excellent analytical, writing and communication skills are required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Able to operate well independently and on team projects. Ideal candidate must be confident, enthusiastic, and a self-starter who is results oriented, exercises good judgment, and is sensitive to the needs of the business while skillfully and diplomatically managing risks for the organization.
  • Ability to think strategically and creatively and to identify and resolve legal issues in the context of the organization's short- and long-term goals.
  • Extensive knowledge of federal and state laws impacting mortgage servicing, such as TILA, TRID, ECOA, FCRA, FDCPA, RESPA, Fair Housing Act, Homeowners Protection Act and predatory lending laws.
  • Understanding of the regulatory framework applicable to servicing of residential mortgage loans subject to oversight by Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB)
  • In depth understanding of FHA, VA, USDA, GSE, and HAMP servicing rules.

Preferred Qualifications
In-house experience with servicing legal standards, regulations, and in-house policies.

You will work closely with internal and external clients on a wide variety of matters relating to mortgage servicing compliance. Responsibilities
  • Help maintain compliance with all applicable state/federal laws and regulations impacting the mortgage servicing business.
  • Maintain and update legal compliance inventory of state/federal laws and regulations related to mortgage servicing activities, as well as FHA, VA, USDA and GSE guidelines.
  • Work cooperatively with Compliance department to keep up with all changes to laws; advise relevant lines of business within Servicing Operations areas of changes in a timely manner.
  • Assist with drafting and implementing policies and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and investor requirements.
  • Provide legal advice and ongoing support for mortgage servicing operations and customer assistance related issues.
  • Advise senior leadership of legal servicing risks within the organization; help devise practical solutions for any issues raised.
  • Assist with responses to regulators/auditors’ examinations and reviews.
