We are looking for an attorney with 0 to 5 years experience for an associate position in a plaintiffs' side civil litigation firm. We primarily handle personal injury, Fair Labor Standards Act ("Wage and Hour"), first party insurance, and civil appellate work.
The associate attorney should be a good writer and strong oral advocate. The associate will be responsible, under supervision, for drafting pleadings, motions, discovery, and responses; taking and defending depositions; attending hearings to argue motions; and trying cases to a jury or judge—initially as second chair, but eventually taking lead as first chair. The associate may work on appellate briefing and may eventually give oral arguments in the Courts of Appeal.
Ideal applicants without work experience as an attorney will have achieved excellent grades in Civil Procedure, Pre-Trial and Trial Advocacy, Evidence, and Torts. Excellence in Federal Courts is a strong plus. Mock Trial and/or Moot Court experience is a plus.
Ideal applicants with experience as an attorney have handled civil litigation before Texas or Federal Courts, and have demonstrated strong written and oral advocacy in those matters. Applicants with limited experience should demonstrate the same grade excellence discussed above.
All candidates must have a capability to think critically, be familiar with legal research and writing, and be prepared to both be challenged and to challenge other professionals in the firm with creative solutions to legal issues.
As an associate, you will learn to handle all aspects of a civil matter, from sign-up to settlement, or judgment and appeal. You will work with and manage support staff. Respectful treatment of staff, other attorneys, and clients is non-negotiable. However, the firm culture is generally casual. We don't wear suits unless we have an appearance to make. You will eventually have a docket of cases for which you will take primary responsibility, with supervision from a partner or senior associate.
