Description:
Under general supervision, provides legal services to indigent adult and juvenile criminal defendants in appeals to the Minnesota appellate courts, in post-conviction proceedings, in supervised release revocation hearings, and in other related proceedings.

Definition/Summary of Duties:
Under general supervision, performs work of routine difficulty in providing legal services to indigent defendants in post-conviction cases, appeals of sentencing and probation revocation orders, supervised release and parole revocation hearings, and similar tasks. This position requires knowledge of criminal and administrative law and procedure; knowledge of the principles, methods and practices of legal research and investigation; knowledge of judicial procedures and the Rules of Evidence; and knowledge of the pleading and practice of effective presentation of court cases.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
The position requires excellent research and writing skills; good knowledge of criminal law and procedure, evidence, and administrative law and procedure; good knowledge of judicial procedures and the Rules of Criminal Procedure, Civil Appellate Procedure, and Evidence. The position also requires the ability to analyze legal documents, organize facts to effectively present evidence and other material in written and oral form, and to present persuasive arguments in court cases. The applicant must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with prosecutors, judges, hearing officers, corrections agents, colleagues, as well as with clients and the general public. Basic computer skills.

Education and Experience:
Graduation from an accredited college of law and admission to the Bar of the State of Minnesota or a person who has graduated from an accredited law school and is certified to practice under the Supreme Court Student Practice Rule. Individuals hired under the Student Practice Rule must pass the bar on their first attempt. Failure to pass the bar is grounds for dismissal. An office that utilizes personal computers and has email and access to the Internet.
