The Office of the Vice President & General Counsel of Johns Hopkins University seeks applications to the position of Associate or Assistant General Counsel that will focus primarily on the University’s employment and student-related legal matters. The Office of the Vice President & General Counsel provides legal counsel and representation to Johns Hopkins University and all its schools, divisions, affiliates, and related entities. The Office serves the legal needs of University trustees, officers, deans, directors, faculty, and staff in their official capacities. It also is responsible for hiring and managing all outside counsel to represent the University and its units.
Working with the Vice President & General Counsel and other lawyers in the Office, the selected attorney will provide legal counsel on a full range of federal and state laws related to employment and student affairs, including Title VII, Title IX, FLSA, ADA and labor laws. The selected attorney will also advise on student conduct policies, policies and practices related to the investigation and adjudication of discrimination, harassment and sexual misconduct, and faculty and student employment policies and procedures. The Associate/Assistant General Counsel will provide counsel to University administrators, specifically including human resources and student affairs administrators, on faculty appointments, employment terminations, reductions in force, discipline, discrimination, and student misconduct. The selected attorney may also handle administrative matters before the EEOC, the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil rights, and other federal and state governmental agencies. The attorney will help the Office enhance legal support for University administrators responsible for certain compliance matters, including compliance initiatives related to Title IX, SaVE Act, VAWA, and Clery Act. The ability and aptitude to maintain a high level of expertise in these areas is critical.

- Law degree from an accredited institution.
- At least 3 years of experience as a practicing attorney (judicial clerkships count as practice years) for Assistant General Counsel and at least 5 years of experience as a practicing attorney (judicial clerkships count as practice years) for Associate General Counsel. The selected attorney will be appointed as either Assistant General Counsel or Assistant General Counsel based on their level of experience.
- Admission in good standing to the Maryland Bar, or ability to obtain admission within one year.

- Experience in student affairs law and issues.
- Experience in litigation, ADR, conflict resolution and crisis intervention.
- Experience in faculty employment and governance issues.
- Experience advising on-campus police/security issues.
