The Tort Division of the NYC Law Department is accepting applications from admitted attorneys for Assistant Corporation Counsel positions in various units of the division. Tort Division attorneys defend the City of New York in personal injury and property damage cases primarily in State Court. The Tort Division is currently hiring for the following units:
Intake Unit: Intake attorneys handle a large caseload of cases at the commencement of actions to determine initial case strategy, conduct initial discovery, and recommend representation determinations. They also identify cases appropriate for early settlement, insurance takeovers and other internal referrals. They write and argue affirmative motions. Once a request for judicial intervention is filed in a case, the intake attorneys passes the case on to either the Pre-Trial, Vertical or SLED Unit.

Pre-Trial Unit: Pre-trial attorneys handle cases while they are in discovery. They appear regularly in court to attend discovery or other status conferences and argue motions. Attorneys take and defend depositions, request and exchange discovery, engage in settlement negotiations, and write and argue substantive and procedural motions. Once they are experienced pre-trial attorneys, they also may serve as a 1st or 2nd chair of a trial, in addition to their pre-trial case responsibilities.

Vertical Unit: Attorneys in the Vertical Units are assigned Tort cases to handle from inception through resolution. Vertical Unit attorneys engage in discovery, take and defend depositions, write and argue motions, engage in settlement negotiations. When a case that a Vertical Unit attorney is assigned goes to trial, the attorney will serve as a 1st, 2nd or 3rd chair on that trial, as appropriate for their level of experience.

State Law Enforcement Defense (SLED) Unit: Attorneys assigned to the SLED Unit represent police officers in cases involving claims of misconduct. Attorneys in this unit are assigned to either handle assigned litigation tasks on a number of cases (like pre-trial attorneys) or are assigned cases from commencement through resolution (like vertical unit attorneys) either by settlement or motion. When a case that a SLED attorney is assigned vertically goes to trial, the attorney will serve as a 1st, 2nd or 3rd chair on that trial, as appropriate for their level of experience.

Please note that the Tort Division has offices in every borough and attorneys may be assigned to a borough based on the needs of the division.

Minimum Qual Requirements:
  • Please see below of specific requirements for applicants for each unit. All candidates must be graduates of an ABA approved law school, admitted to practice in New York State and have at least one year of civil litigation experience.
