The Tort Division of the NYC Law Department is accepting applications for the position of Assistant Corporation Counsel in its Staten Island office. The hired attorney will be responsible for drafting affirmative and responsive motions, requesting document discovery, preparing discovery responses, making court appearances in both Civil and Supreme Courts on preliminary conferences, compliance conferences, and oral argument on motions, conducting factual and legal research, interviewing and preparing witnesses, and conducting depositions. The hired attorney will also be responsible for entering cases into and updating the Tort Division’s Intake Database with all activities conducted, summaries of discovery received, and deposition reports. Appearance in Small Claims Court, negotiation and resolution of Small Claims Court cases, and other settlement conferencing and settlement negotiations may also be assigned. In addition, the hired attorney may be assigned to second-seat trials and to try cases in Civil or Supreme Court.
Minimum Qual Requirements Applicants must be graduates of ABA approved law schools and either be admitted to practice in New York or be in the process of getting admitted. The ideal candidate should possess strong organizational, time management, writing, and oral advocacy skills. Prior municipal tort litigation and trial experience is preferred, but not required.
