The Office of Criminal Appeals in Anchorage is seeking an appellate attorney. Lawyers in this section represent the state in most felony, and some misdemeanor, appeals of criminal convictions and in all appeals of post-conviction relief actions before the Alaska Court of Appeals and Alaska Supreme Court. They also represent the state in federal habeas corpus actions in the federal district court and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. The primary duties for this position include researching legal issues, drafting appellate briefs, petitions, and memorandums, and presenting oral arguments.
This position provides an opportunity to engage in the development of legal principles in a collaborative and intellectually stimulating environment. Qualified candidates should have excellent writing, legal research, and oral advocacy skills. Prior prosecutorial or trial court experience is preferred, but is not required. If you have an intellectual curiosity about criminal law and its evolution, this is the place for you. Salary is determined by the legal background and experience of the selected candidate. Promotions are provided as certain experience levels are reached. Regular salary increases are provided every 1-2 years. A comprehensive state benefits package is provided, including life, health, dental and vision insurance; a retirement annuity plan that takes the place of the federal Social Security Plan in which the state provides a 6.13% match of your gross pay; a separate retirement investment portfolio in which the state matches pre-tax contributions of up to 5% of your gross eligible salary; options for deferred compensation; 21 days of personal leave for new employees, which increases over time; and assistance with moving expenses.
