We are looking for a Vice President, Regional Head of Insurance Law based in Chicago or New York

Your Team:
The Insurance Law Team provides timely, accurate legal advice to the Underwriting, Line of Business and Market Management organizations. We provide focused legal advice and assist our clients on legal and regulatory interpretation and compliance, insurance policy form wordings, operational best practices, evaluation of risk, distribution, programs and MGAs, resolution of consumer concerns, and policyholder and agent communications.

The Impact You Will Have
Reporting to Regional Head of Legal, CEO - Legal - North America, you will join the team as a Vice President Associate General Counsel – Insurance law, responsible for providing strategic and operational leadership and general business counsel to all areas of the organization under the North American Region, including the Canada Branch, Latin America, and A European Multinational Financial Services Company Risk Transfer. You will work with senior business leaders in assuring strategic support for the company's objectives, acting as a trusted advisor regarding legal issues relating to implementation of regional strategy, processes, and products. You will also manage a designated team of insurance law and litigation specialists.

Some of your specific responsibilities could include:
  • Planning, organizing and directing the work of assigned staff to research and address the legal issues within the Insurance Law specialty, including serving as a technical expert and resource for the Global Insurance Law Practice Group.
  • Providing daily business counseling and advice across all Lines of Business (LOBs) and operational units carrying out a diversified commercial insurance business.
  • Work with the Business Units, Market Management and Communications, Finance, Operations and Global Partners to deliver legal services to optimize the business in connection with the development, issuance, administration and distribution of the Company's insurance products and underwriting processes including restructuring activities and regional expansion.
  • Proactively review and/or create standardized (re)insurance wordings and other types of commercial contracts across all functions, lines of business and jurisdictions for compliance with legal requirements and to reduce risk.
  • Counsel senior management on legal handling of business transactions, participating in structuring and negotiating complex transactions and set up procedures to reduce risk.
  • Coordinate the use of external law firms to reduce the amount spent while improving quality.
  • Proactively lead and steer major corporate lawsuits, with an emphasis on solving disputes prior to litigation.
  • Develop and review corporate governance and compliance procedures, proactively providing advice and support on implementation, while identifying potential legal or regulatory issues which may impact A European Multinational Financial Services Company Commercial strategy, products or business.

What You'll Bring to the Role
  • 11+ years of leadership experience practicing in law firms or blue-chip companies;
  • Demonstrated expert in large multi-line commercial insurance with a national and/or international focus;
  • Experience with domestic admitted and non-admitted markets as well as with multinational insurance placements or analysis;
  • Proven track record negotiating complex legal agreements as well as complex legal and business issues (i.e., licensing, program business, sanctions, broker issues, anti-trust, review marketing materials, etc.);
  • Prior Litigation experience;
  • Understanding of regulatory and compliance environment including relevant policies, laws and regulations - across multiple jurisdictions;
  • Strong experience drafting and negotiating contracts and strategic management of contractual disputes;
  • Ability to negotiate best position for A European Multinational Financial Services Company Commercial, often in contentious situations, managing conflicting priorities of the various parties;
  • Ability to express ideas and messages clearly, both written and verbally;
  • Demonstrated skills regarding collaboration, innovation, and providing proactive legal advice.
  • Ability to take initiative and solve problems;
  • Strong leadership skills, with an ability to develop and motivate team members; and
  • Juris Doctorate.
