Position Summary:
The role of the Staff Attorney is to provide legal services including representation to v students in a general practice setting with emphasis on tenants' rights and criminal defense. This role will provide educational programming to students on relevant legal issues and facilitate internship experience for law students. The Staff Attorney will assist the Director with administrative tasks including assessment and budgeting.

Specific Duties & Tasks:
  • Counsel, advise, and represent A Public Research University students in both civil and criminal legal matters including drafting documents, engaging in negotiation and/or mediation, and representing students in court.
  • Investigate case law and statutes to properly advise clients.
  • Assist in the analysis of data and development of reports; Monitor and report the status of assigned projects.
  • Assist in conducting assessments of services, programs, and activities.
  • Participate in outreach events to promote awareness of the office. Assist with the development and presentation of educational programs to educated University students in areas such as tenants' rights and criminal law.
  • Assist in the functional supervision, training, and evaluation of certified legal interns in the competent and ethical representation of University students.

Required Qualifications:
  • A Juris Doctor degree awarded by an accredited law school.
  • Admitted to practice law in the State of Iowa and in good standing with the Iowa Supreme Court OR ability to become admitted to practice law in the State of Iowa on motion or by transfer of UBE score by start date.
  • Experience (typically 1-3 yrs) in the practice of civil and criminal law including litigation.
  • Ability to read, use strong research skills, interpret and draw accurate conclusions from legal and factual information.
  • Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors.
  • Ability to work with a variety of individuals and groups in a constructive and civil manner while appreciating the unique contribution of individuals.
  • Computer experience using standard office systems; MS Office and Outlook.

Desirable Qualifications:
  • Work experience representing clients on landlord-tenant issues and in criminal defense.
  • Work experience providing legal instruction to law students.
  • Knowledge of effective presentation tools and techniques; ability to present educational programs on legal issues to groups with the appropriate degree of formality.
  • Ability to establish and build healthy working relations and partnerships within a shared office environment, including university or college students.
  • Knowledge of University policies, procedures and regulations.
