Position Overview:
A New York City-Based Non-Profit Organization seeks (2) part-time attorneys on a temporary basis primarily to provide civil legal screenings and legal consultations for survivors of domestic and gender based violence seeking assistance at New York City Family Justice Centers (FJC) in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Staten Island. The areas of focus are primarily family offense, custody/visitation, child/spousal support, and divorce. The Staff Attorney will also assist pro se clients by drafting family law petitions and other filings, assist with pro se clinics. The attorney will report to the Senior Program Director and Associate Program Director of the Family Law Project at the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Staten Island FJC locations.

Responsibilities:
  • Provides pro se legal assistance, including initial screenings and follow-up consultations as needed, to clients regarding family law matters.
  • Drafts family law petitions and other filings for pro se clients.
  • Provides related advocacy for pro se clients as needed, including with the criminal legal and child protective systems.
  • Facilitates clients' access to intra-agency and outside resources and makes referrals accordingly.
  • Collaborates with FJC staff and partners to provide services and resources to clients.
  • Performs any other department or agency-related duties or special projects as directed by supervisor.

Requirements:
  • J.D. Degree
  • Admission to the New York State Bar
  • At least 2 years of relevant legal experience
  • Strong lawyering and advocacy skills
  • Experience working in the domestic violence field
  • Highly motivated to provide zealous, knowledgeable, culturally competent, and empathic legal advocacy todomestic violence survivors
  • Ability to work well with people from diverse communities and backgrounds
  • Foreign language skills a plus
