A Business Services Company is seeking Senior Counsel I - Litigation to provide in-house legal services to the company with particular emphasis on tort, automobile, general liability, and commercial/ business litigation. Responsibilities include: working with the Deputy General Counsel – Litigation on the strategic view and company position on all areas of litigation and risk avoidance; independently managing a large docket of federal and state litigation, administrative proceedings and arbitrations involving personal injury, contract (business), property damage and environmental law disputes, including management of local counsel, risk assessment, oversight of case discovery, participation in mediation and settlement conferences, oversight of trial or arbitration, and case resolution; providing active oversight of local counsel nationwide in all aspects of litigation, including pleadings, discovery, settlement and trial; assessing facts and law to communicate associated risks throughout the progress of litigation to internal clients and colleagues in the Legal Department. In addition, this role will be responsible for assisting in the development of strategic legal positions to ensure consistency, efficiency, and effectiveness in legal positions, pleadings, briefs, and discovery responses; selecting appropriate local counsel to be assigned to new litigated liability claims; reviewing new files for coverage and liability issues and work with local counsel to develop a cost-effective defense strategy, direct claims through the litigation cycle, and resolve issues and recommend settlement where appropriate; increase the effective delivery of legal services through the use of preventative law, overseeing eDiscovery and litigation hold notice program; and assisting in participation of the formulation and implementation of Company policies, practices and procedures to support compliance with local, state and federal laws in a broad variety of areas.

Required:
  • Education Requirement - Juris Doctor Degree
  • Admitted to a state bar
  • Minimum 6 years full-time relevant legal experience
  • Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Travel requirement based on business need, but not likely to exceed 20%
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) and intranet/internet
