A Civil Legal Advocacy Organization provides civil legal services to low-income New Mexicans for a variety of legal issues including domestic violence/family law, consumer protection, housing, and benefits. NMLA has locations throughout the state including Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Las Cruces, Gallup, Roswell, Silver City, Clovis, Hobbs, Las Vegas, Taos, and Santa Ana.

A Civil Legal Advocacy Organization seeks a Managing Attorney for the Statewide Intake, Referral and Advice unit.

For this position, the Managing Attorney will be responsible for:
  • Supervising and mentoring staff attorneys, paralegals, other staff and volunteers;
  • Performing administrative duties and working in close collaboration with other members of NMLA's management team;
  • Monitoring the intake and referral processes;
  • Coordinating with individual NMLA Advocates to provide service involving less than full representation such as: brief advice and counsel self-help assistance, client legal education and other alternative non-litigation service methods.
  • Carrying a reasonable load of brief service cases, counsel & advice cases, clinic presentations, and other non-litigation advocacy activities in many areas of law such as:
    • Family Law
    • Domestic Violence
    • Landlord/Tenant foreclosure
    • Public Benefits
    • Consumer Law
    • Tribal Law
    • Veterans
  • Being active in local bar and community activities;
  • Participating in community education and outreach to eligible clients;
  • Recruitment of and collaboration with pro bono attorneys.

The Intake Team is fast-paced and requires quick and confident decision-making about the best response that can be given to a client. The position requires an experienced, innovative, and highly motivated person who is passionate about justice and strongly committed to helping NMLA better serve our client community.

Essential Qualifications:
  • Experience as a licensed attorney;
  • Admission to practice in New Mexico required or ability to qualify for a limited license (https://nmexam.org/apply-for-admission/limited-license/);
  • Prior experience in administrative and supervisory roles;
  • Experience in a legal aid program or other relevant practice environment is preferred;
  • Must be able to effectively use computer technology and remote communications systems, including shared on-line workspaces, web meeting and videoconferencing software, to effectively supervise and co-counsel with staff located in multiple offices;
  • Must be able to work effectively with the IRA team;
  • Candidates also must possess excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • The ability to manage multiple tasks, manage a caseload and build collaborative relationships within the staff and the community;
  • May require infrequent travel for training and conferences;

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Working knowledge of the Case Management System, LegalServer preferred;
  • Proficiency in Spanish, is a plus.
