Description:

Manhattan Beach law firm seeking 5-8 year litigation attorney to work with a small team of litigators, primarily focused on business commercial, shareholder derivative, probate, and trust litigation. Must be licensed by the California State Bar.

Summary:
Initially, this position will be primarily responsible for helping to prepare a complex case for trial, which includes helping to propound discovery, respond to discovery, and draft motions. The position may also assist with trust and probate cases.

This individual must be familiar with California state procedure.

Essential Functions:
  • Handle matters at the inception of the client relationship, such as preparing and executing engagement letters; meeting with, communicating with, and advising clients; and developing a comprehensive litigation strategy tailored to clients' goals
  • Conduct pre-litigation activities, such as identifying the potential issues, researching the applicable law, assembling names of potential witnesses, interviewing witnesses and other parties relevant to the case, and examining evidence that could be used at trial
  • Prepare pleadings, motions, applications, briefs, settlement agreements, and other litigation-related documents
  • Manage and execute discovery plans, such as preparing and responding to interrogatories, requests for production of documents, requests for admission, and subpoenas
  • Take depositions of other parties, percipients or expert witnesses, and defend clients' depositions
  • Represent clients in the courtroom by presenting clients' cases, submitting evidence, examining and cross-examining witnesses and experts, and arguing motions
  • Participate in mediation and settlement conferences with judges
  • Oversee the strategy for clients to collect on judgments entered in their favor
  • Draft post-trial motions, identify grounds for appeal, collect evidence for the appellate record, develop strategies for appeal, draft documents for appeal, and present the appeal before the appellate court

  • Commitment to maintaining a high degree of discretion, confidentiality, and integrity in the handling of personal client information, including following the Rules of Professional Conduct
  • Ability to cultivate collaborative relationships with team members, as well as existing and future clients, by maintaining effective, consistent and timely communication
  • Exceptional ability to think on feet, multi-task, prioritize, work in a fast-paced environment, and meet deadlines
  • Ability to handle a high case load and work varied work hours to meet client needs
  • Resourceful and capable of research and problem solving
  • Strong attention to detail and consistently thorough follow-through with both internal and external customers

  • Solid critical thinking skills and good judgment
  • Ability to identify when help is needed and willingness to ask for it

Education & Experience:
  • J.D. from an accredited law school and licensed with the California State Bar
  • 5-8 years of relevant experience
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, Westlaw.
