About this role:
The Legal Intern role is an 8-week position in the Office of the General Counsel ("OGC") at the nation's first land-grant university, A Public Land-Grant Research University, in Manhattan, Kansas. The Legal Intern will perform entry-level professional legal work to support the General Counsel and the OGC. The position is designed to provide meaningful service to the attorneys who serve A Public Land-Grant Research University, its three campuses, and extension offices while providing the Intern with invaluable experience in the practice of Higher Education law.

Responsibilities:
The Legal Intern will perform routine legal work and assist attorneys in various legal assignments. Generally, the work will involve conducting legal research, drafting legal memorandum, reviewing documents, keeping, and maintaining legal files, and performing other tasks as needed. Some specific examples of work include the following:
  • Conducting legal research on Title VII & IX Civil Rights law issues and Labor and Employment law issues.
  • Reviewing, summarizing, and reporting on higher education law and policy developments.
  • Conducting online and legal research on Name, Image, Likeness, NCAA Conference Realignment, and Transfer Portal matters.
  • Drafting legal documents, including: memoranda, correspondence, portions of briefs and pleadings for court matters, and position statements in administrative agency matters.
  • Reviewing documents for litigation and open records requests.
  • Reviewing contracts for compliance with legal requirements.
  • Organizing and maintaining legal files.

The Legal Intern's work is subject to review while in process and upon completion. Assistance is available as needed. In addition, the Legal Intern will participate in the OGC's regular staff meetings, during which a wide range of legal and administrative issues are discussed among the General Counsel and the legal team. The expectation is that the Legal Intern will also be invited to participate in meetings involving OGC and university clients.

Worksite Options:
This position is eligible for hybrid worksite. Work is performed partially remote and partially on employer premises or designated assignment location.

What You'll Need to Succeed:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • The Legal Intern must be enrolled at an accredited U.S. law school and conclude their second year by May 31, 2024. They must have a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
  • Demonstrated interest in higher education law.
  • Is a strong writer: this includes both legal writing and general writing.
  • Possesses strong research skills, both legal research and research of non-legal online resources.
  • Understands how to apply legal principles to individual cases or problems.
  • Has the ability to understand and interpret constitutional provisions, statutes, and administrative regulations.
  • Analyzes facts, evidence, and precedents and arrives at logical conclusions.
  • Communicates effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Acts professionally at all times.
