Function
The purpose of the class is to, under the supervision of an Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney, represent the Commonwealth in General District Court, Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, and Circuit Court. The class works under administrative supervision, reporting major activities to executive-level administrators.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Requires graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor or Doctor of Jurisprudence degree within the last 18 months from date of application OR must be within third year of law school and have a Third-Year Practice Certificate.
  • Law intern experience in criminal prosecution preferred.
  • The candidate is expected to sit for the Virginia Bar Exam during the period closest to their graduation date from law school. The candidate will be given the opportunity to take the Bar Exam no more than twice, consecutively, and is expected to pass the Bar Exam during that period while employed in this role.
  • Must successfully pass a background check related to this position.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driver's record based on the City of Hampton's criteria.

Additional Requirements:
  • The incumbent may be considered “essential personnel” during City emergency situations or at the direction of the City Manager which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
