The Second Judicial District is accepting applications for a Judicial Law Clerk or Law Clerk I (student) for the Honorable Shawn Bartsh, who is chambered at the Ramsey County Courthouse at 15 W. Kellogg Blvd, Saint Paul, MN.

A Judicial Law Clerk position offers the opportunity to work within the A Government Entity at the trial court level, gain insight into judicial/court processes with a perspective on the administration of justice, and to sharpen your critical legal thinking/legal writing skills. The law clerk performs administrative, courtroom, and legal research/writing functions under the direct supervision of a district court judge.

The anticipated end date for this position is September 30, 2024.

This position requires in-person work but may include occasional flexibility to work remotely.

Rate of Pay:
  • Law school graduate - $31.24/hr minimum starting pay rate
  • Law school student - $23.60/hr minimum starting pay rate

Job Responsibilities:

  • Assists in the day-to-day management of the Judge's chambers, helps maintain the Judge's daily schedule, and responds to emails and phone calls.
  • Conducts legal research and prepares drafts of written memoranda and orders.
  • Attends all court sessions and performs court-related duties such as calling calendars, administering oaths, preparing draft orders, recording necessary case information, and maintaining records attendant to court proceedings.
  • Monitors cases assigned to the judge and keeps track of upcoming hearings and trials.
  • This job requires a person who is detailed oriented, has a strong work ethic, and can handle many tasks at one time. The law clerk prepares many orders that need to be issued in a short time. Court is fast paced, with multiple hearings weekly. The judge's law clerk is an integral part of the chambers team.

Typical Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school and/or license to practice law in Minnesota OR current enrollment in law school with ability to work a full-time, 40-hour week.
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Detail oriented - accuracy of factual details in orders is critical.
  • Excellent legal research and writing abilities.
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple orders, motions, etc. and track due dates.
  • Ability to handle a wide variety of tasks simultaneously.
  • Must be able to deal professionally and courteously with court personnel, attorneys, self-represented litigants, the public, and media.
  • This position requires a commitment of at least one year.
