About this Position: This is a full-time exempt position based in Anchorage, Alaska.

Qualifications:
Personal: The individual for this position must possess excellent written and oral communication skills, self-confidence and be able to advocate on behalf of clients with compassion. The person must be dependable, be able to work with a team of co-workers in stressful situations and to work with people from diverse cultures whose first language is not English. The individual must also be committed to providing legal representation to indigent individuals and those normally excluded from the justice system. Bilingual in Spanish preferred.

Education/Experience: J.D. degree required and licensed to practice law in Alaska or be eligible for a waiver through Alaska Legal Services. Excellent oral and written communication skills and work experience with culturally diverse clients required. Previous work experience with non-profit legal services program and minimum two years legal experience is preferred.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Provide legal representation of clients in proceedings before the Department of Homeland Security, the Immigration Court, the Board of Immigration Appeals, and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Includes appearances at hearings, preparation of witnesses, legal research, and the preparation of briefs and other pleadings.
  • Provide legal services including Family-based Immigration; Applications for Lawful Permanent Residence; Naturalization/Citizenship; Temporary Protected Status (TPS); Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA); Asylum; Children and Youth; and Removal/deportation defense.
  • Conduct client interviews and review supporting documentation.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, colleagues, and immigration authorities both verbally and in writing.
  • Create partnerships with community organizations serving Alaska's immigrant populations.
  • Conduct educational events, such as Know Your Rights presentations.
