This position is hybrid eligible, with onsite and remote work accommodations. Candidate must reside in one of our regions in North Carolina.

Responsible for ensuring that An In-House Firm remains in compliance with all laws, rules, and regulations, proactively monitors risk, provides general corporate counsel to the company, and oversees the company's compliance program and related initiatives.

Under the direct supervision of the Chief Executive Officer, this full-time management position will manage all legal matters for the Company and oversee the Company's state-wide compliance program and related initiatives. The General Counsel/Chief Compliance Officer will be responsible for oversight of the company's legal transactions, reviewing and negotiating contracts, advising the company and its employees on healthcare regulatory matters, healthcare compliance, and employment law, and overseeing all HIPAA privacy and security matters. The General Counsel/Chief Compliance Officer will work with providers and staff in multiple departments to maintain compliance with federal and state laws, rules, and regulations. The General Counsel/Chief Compliance Officer will ensure that practitioners and staff are knowledgeable as to the requirements for documenting, coding, and billing medical services in a complex and ever-changing regulatory environment. The person in this position investigates, audits, and recommends remediation for any compliance investigations, HIPAA complaints, or violations.

Requirements:
Qualifications and Experience:
  • Juris Doctor/Doctorate
  • North Carolina bar license to practice law.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience as a healthcare regulatory, compliance, or transactions attorney.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and guidelines concerning legal and business activities within healthcare organizations.
  • Experience in health law, healthcare regulatory matters, fraud and abuse laws, contract review, and healthcare privacy and security.
  • Law firm and prior in-house experience preferred.
  • Specific, thorough understanding of regulatory requirements relating to healthcare compliance, including experience in compliance investigations and audits.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills required including manipulating large quantities of data.
  • Ability to exercise initiative, and decision-making to effectively plan, prioritize, and complete projects/tasks with little supervision in a fast-paced, changing environment.
  • Exceptional analytical skills: demonstrated ability to gather, interpret, and report analytical information.
  • Experience working with physicians or physicians practice groups preferred.
  • Advanced working experience in Microsoft Office including Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills: face-to-face, email, written correspondence, telephone.
  • Highest level of professionalism in work ethic, appearance, and disposition.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Provide excellent legal and business counsel to company leaders and physicians.
  • Lead legal and compliance directives and initiatives for company.
  • Ensure education and implementation of federal, state, and local rules and regulations, which includes working with physicians and other providers.
  • Ensure timely execution of compliance program elements; assist in the development of appropriate policies relating to compliance.
  • Plans, manages, coordinates, and delegates internal auditing projects with departmental and divisional managers; prepares and distributes reports.
  • Document findings, identify adverse trends, and provide appropriate recommendations or conclusions to the Chief Executive Officer and Board of Directors, as appropriate.
  • Assist in the development, execution, and follow-up of action plans and education to improve performance.
  • Research compliance and audit information; investigate areas of concerns.
  • Compile, analyze, and summarize compliance data.
  • Work on complex and unique issues related to counsel and compliance - must make sound judgments based on information provided with or without supporting data and analysis.
  • Review/approve legal contracts and documents related to the business operations of the organization.
